Fort Charles at Port Royal named after Charles II was built during his reign and both sides of the fort were washed by the sea while the inland side forms what is the Parade Ground today. Fort Charles became the headquarters of the Royal Navy in the 18th century and carried a full complement of 104 guns and never once attacked in its history.
